FAQ

The Nature of Wood:

Because wood is a natural product, it will vary in both color and grain. Even though I will make the same design again & again, no two boards will be exactly the same. This is what makes each board uniquely beautiful. Also due to the nature of wood wood, milling, and humidity, all dimensions can vary from those listed. Even weight can be different because of the densities from species to soecies as well as individual boards. all weights and demensions are only approximate and can varfy widely.

What is the difference between end grain and straight grain?

If you look down at a tree stump, what you are seeing is the end grain. End grain boards are made by glueing together the end pieces of woodrails giving it the distinct chesckerboard like pattern you see. Using the end grain helps to reduce the stress on your knife and the cutting board. Instead of crushing the wood fibers, the blade goes between them much like cutting into a firm brush. When you pull the knife up, the wood fibers will close back together which helps keep the board from scarring.

Straight grain is what you see when you look at the milled lumber. The majority of cutting boards you see in stores are made using the straight grain because they are easier to manufacture thereby allowing companies to mass produce them.

Can I put my cutting board in the dishwasher?

NO!
Never put your wooden cutting board in the dishwasher. Scrub your board after each use with warm soapy water, and dry it with a towel. Then depending on how much you use your board, I recommend re-oiling it at least one a month. You can use mineral oil, but mineral never really dries. I use grapeseed oil that I purchase from a health food store. Butcher block oil is also good.

How do I get rid of odors?

If the odor ia acidic, sprinkle baking soda on the board with a small amount of water. Let it sit for about half an hour then wash as usual. If it is alkaline, use white vinegar.
